Portland builders deal with close-in infill on the east side, big industrial campuses in Washington County, and winter storms that blow in from the Columbia River Gorge. Bauzaunwelt is the official ZND General Distributor in the USA. We sell ZND temporary fence panels, gates and accessories to contractors, event producers and public agencies in the Portland metro area. We do not rent. You own the fence.
Portland rules for fencing in the street
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) handles temporary use of the public right-of-way through its Temporary Street Use Permitting program (TSUP). A temporary street use permit lets you reserve on-street parking, close part of a sidewalk, or set up traffic control in the street, and construction is one of the listed uses. PBOT requires a traffic control plan or a work space diagram for every permit that uses or closes a sidewalk, travel lane or street. The diagram can be as simple as a box drawn around the part of the right-of-way you will occupy. Applications are made online. PBOT says permits are typically issued within 5 to 10 business days, so build that time into your schedule.
Sites in Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham or across the river in Vancouver, Washington answer to their own city permit offices. Fencing on private property is usually governed by your building permit conditions. Our panels meet common construction-site requirements, but PBOT or your local permit office decides what goes in the street. Check with them before installing.
What keeps Portland fence crews busy
The I-5 bridge and long public works
The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program plans to replace the I-5 bridges between Portland and Vancouver. In July 2026, federal agencies issued an amended record of decision, completing the program's federal environmental review. Planners expect construction to begin in 2028. Big public works like this need yard and laydown perimeters that stay up for years. ST812 8' anti-climb panels, a vehicle gate conversion kit and barbed wire extensions suit that kind of long-term use.
Rose Festival and waterfront events
The Portland Rose Festival's CityFair takes over Tom McCall Waterfront Park for three weekends each spring. Organizers of riverfront events need queue lines, perimeter fencing and back-of-house screening. Use bar barriers for entries, ST612 panels for perimeters, and a fence cover for screening.
East wind from the Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge is a natural channel for air moving across the Cascades. In winter, that can send strong east winds into the eastern Portland metro. During one such event, the National Weather Service forecast gusts up to 60 mph at freeway level in the western Gorge, and even higher at Crown Point. Sites in Gresham, Troutdale and around PDX feel it first. On covered or exposed runs, use Windbreaker Elite stabilizers and Z-weights. On soft, wet ground, use earth anchors.

Is buying better than renting in Portland?
Bauzaunwelt sells. We do not rent. If you need a fence for a single short job, construction fence rental in Portland may cost less. If you run several sites at once, keep an event inventory, or face long public projects, owning usually works out better over time. New customers pay by credit card or prepayment. Public agencies can also use a government purchase card or an agency purchase order, and Net 30 terms are reserved for established customers. We are registered in SAM.gov (CAGE 21BQ4).
Portland temporary fence FAQ
Do I need a PBOT permit to close a sidewalk for construction fence?
Yes. In Portland, closing part of a sidewalk, lane or street for construction needs a Temporary Street Use Permit from PBOT, with a traffic control plan or work space diagram. PBOT says permits are typically issued in 5 to 10 business days. Suburbs and Vancouver, WA have their own permit offices.
How much is freight to Portland?
Freight to Portland starts at $749 for a 12-panel order. The rate is shown live at checkout, and we quote exact rates by ZIP code. Orders ship by LTL truck from Madera, CA, so you need a forklift or dock, or request unloading on your quote.
How do I keep fence up during east wind events?
Strong east winds from the Columbia River Gorge hit east metro sites hardest. Use Windbreaker stabilizers with Z-weights or earth anchors, connect every joint, and take covers down before high wind warnings.
Do you have a warehouse in Oregon?
No. All orders ship from the ZND plant in Madera, CA. We have no local warehouse or pickup location in the Portland area.
Should I rent or buy construction fence in Portland?
Bauzaunwelt only sells. Renting can suit one short job. Buying usually pays off for repeat projects, events and long public works.
