Crowd Control Barriers for Events: Which Type to Use

ZND lightweight bar barriers on a transport stillage for events

Festivals, races, concerts and public events all need crowd control, but not every barrier does the same job. Here is which type fits where, and how to plan an order.

Bar barriers and fixed-leg barriers: queues and routes

Steel crowd control barriers, often called bike-rack barricades, guide people along a route, form queues and keep spectators back from a course or stage.

Water-fill barriers: traffic zones and entrances

ZND Slot Blocks in red or white ship empty and are filled with water on site. They interlock into a line for traffic guidance, hazard zones and entrance lanes, and can also serve as fence ballast.

Temporary fence panels: closed perimeters

Where an area must be closed off, such as a ticketed festival ground, a backstage area or a construction zone next to an event, use temporary fence panels instead of barricades. ZND anti-climb panels make it harder to climb in, and a privacy cover blocks sightlines. Add gates for entrances and emergency exits.

Planning your order

  1. Mark routes, queues, perimeters and traffic zones on a site plan.
  2. Measure each section in feet.
  3. Choose the barrier type per section using the list above.
  4. Plan storage and transport: stillage sets are easiest to move with a forklift between events.
  5. Check what your city or venue requires for exits and emergency access before you finalize the layout.

Buy instead of renting every season

Event companies and municipalities that run several events a year often save by owning their barriers. See Buy or Rent Temporary Fence? for a simple comparison.
